This arrangement by Carlo Martelli of perhaps the mightiest and most popular of all organ works is at the other end of the scale from the many that have been made for huge orchestras, although nonetheless effective despite its mere four string players. The arranger Carlo Martelli has amused himself, and he hopes his audience, by combining Bach's famous melody with Puccini's Nessun Dorma which translated means, of course, 'None shall sleep' - hence Sleepers Awake!

It may come as a surprise to many who love this piece that the deep contentment and severity with which it is imbued carry no religious implications.
