Biography
Kershaw, Richard
Richard Kershaw was born in Leeds in 1946 and educated at the City of Norwich School and Balliol College Oxford where he read Music. He graduated in 1968 and went on to take a D. Phil with his thesis on The Solo Keyboard Works of J. N. Hummel. After a short spell of teaching at Aberdeen University he joined the music staff of Sherbourne School in Dorset, where he has remained ever since. In 1999 he changed to part-time teaching which enabled him to concentrate on composing. He plays cello and piano. Night Ride was written for his daughter-in-law Jacqueline, currently a brass teacher in Cornwall. See www.kershawmusic.net/richard

Supplied with both Horn in F and Tenor Horn in E Flat parts, this lively piece in 6/8 is rhythmically challenging for the intermediate horn player. It requires good finger technique and clean tonguing. There are some unexpected entries, lots of accents and sforzandi and, like Serenade by the same composer, much use is made of the second and third valves. After two bars of harp like accompaniment the horn enters with a beautiful melody that rises and falls throughout its course, supported by some really gorgeous harmony changes. The work has been a London College of Music Grade 6 exam piece for Horn in F since 1994, and an Australian Music Examinations Board Series 1 Grade 4 exam piece since 2003.

Requiring careful study and attention to detail it has an equally lively piano part. There is a lovely contrasting middle section before the scherzo returns, ending with a flourish up to top C. An original piece suitable for recital or contest. For schools, studios and professionals. A short dramatic piece for horn and piano approximately grade 6 to 7 standard. Written following a day trip to Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex. Inspired by billowing cumulus clouds often seen in the English countryside on a hot summers day. The piece ends with an optional top C.

The introduction of hand stopping and hand glissando (unique features of the French Horn) challenge the musical, technical and interpretive qualities of both the soloist and accompanist. Written for the composers daughter Serenade has a very attractive melody shared between the horn and piano that is characterized with eighth and sixteenth note rhythms. The accompaniment provides a rich sonority with harp like broken chords, requiring sensitive playing from the horn melody floating above. A fine concert piece for the young horn player.
