Trinity College London Foundation Certificate (Grade 3 Equivalent) Exam Piece for Horn in F until further notice
London College of Music Grade 3 Exam Piece for Horn in F until further notice
Supplied with both Horn in F and Tenor Horn in E Flat parts. Written for the composers daughter Serenade has a very attractive melody shared between the horn and piano that is characterized with eighth and sixteenth note rhythms. The accompaniment provides a rich sonority with harp like broken chords, requiring sensitive playing from the horn melody floating above. A fine concert piece for the young horn player. This work was a Guildhall School of Music and Drama grade 3 exam piece for Horn in F between 1996 and 2003, and was an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) grade 3 exam piece for Horn in F between 1998 and 2012. Serenade has also been a London College of Music grade 3 exam piece for Horn in F since 1994 and has been a Trinity College London Foundation Certificate (Grade 3 Equivalent) Exam Piece for Horn in F since 2004.
Review: “Serenade is a very simple and pleasant sounding solo designed for use by the intermediate hornist. This brief piece (90 seconds), idiomatically written in the key of A flat major, remains in a very playable range for the horn. While the horn part moves about in conjunct motion with eighth and sixteenth note rhythms, the accompaniment produces a rich, supportive sonority through the use of broken chords and constantly flowing accompaniment figures. Both the horn and piano parts are characterized by a lyric application of sixteenth notes in a gently 4/8 meter.” – David Pinkow in American Music Teacher June/July 1997
