Biography
Civil, Alan
Alan Civil was born in 1929 and died in 1989. Alan started to play the French horn as a young boy, and joined an army band as a teenager. He studied the horn with Aubrey Brain, the father of Dennis Brain, and played second horn to Dennis Brain in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, taking over as principal horn when Dennis Brain left. In 1955 Alan joined the Philharmonia as principal horn, and in 1966 he became the principal horn of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he remained until he retired in 1988. He also performed as a soloist and recordings include Mozart's 'Four Horn Concertos' and Benjamin Britten's 'Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings' with Robert Tear. He was also a member of the Alan Civil Horn Trio, taught at the Royal College of Music and was awarded an OBE in 1985. Alan was also a prolific composer and arranger, writing many pieces for the horn as well as for an array of unusual instrument combinations.

Supplied with both Horn in F and Tenor Horn in E Flat parts, this is another fine melody for the intermediate horn player, extending the range upwards with a mixture of typical horn like slurs and climbing sforzando dotted minims all interwoven with a quite challenging accompaniment. This was a London College of Music grade 4 exam piece for Horn in F between 1994 and 1996.
Supplied with both Horn in F and Tenor Horn in E Flat parts, this lively piece in 6/8 is rhythmically challenging for the intermediate horn player. It requires good finger technique and clean tonguing. There are some unexpected entries, lots of accents and sforzandi and, like Serenade by the same composer, much use is made of the second and third valves. The accompanist is equally rewarded with some interesting music to play. This was a London College of Music grade 5 exam piece for Horn in F between 1994 and 2006.

Supplied with both Horn in F and Tenor Horn in E Flat parts, this lovely horn solo, for a student is his/her first year, covers a minimal range with very simple rhythms. The composer has cleverly highlighted the horn part with an interesting and harmonically rich piano accompaniment encouraging the soloist to perform the piece. This work was a Guildhall School of Music and Drama grade 1 exam piece for Horn in F between 1996 and 2003, and was an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) grade 1 exam piece for Horn in F between 1998 and 2012. The work has been a London College of Music grade 1 exam piece since 1994 and a Trinity College London grade 1 exam piece since 2004.

Written for the composers daughter Serenade has a very attractive melody shared between the horn and piano that is characterized with eighth and sixteenth note rhythms. The accompaniment provides a rich sonority with harp like broken chords, requiring sensitive playing from the horn melody floating above. A fine concert piece for the young horn player. Horn & Piano
This work, originally for trombone and piano but including a version for horn and piano, is a delightful composition. The piece was orchestrated by the composer and broadcast by Simon Johnson with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. It is written in the jazz ballad style, sustained and high in register with a little optional improvisation over the final bars.
