Written for Sally Mays and broadcast by her on ABC, each movement is a musical sketch of one of Sally’s friends, mostly distinguished musicians.
Review: “Sally has six friends, each of whom is pictured by a musical piece. We are given the friend’s names but the knowledge of them must come from the music. Technical problems include five-tone clusters in alternating hands, meter changes, syncopation, octave runs, a fair amount of dissonance and other unexpected melodic turns. This modern music is of high quality for those who appreciate the idiom. A late intermediate student should enjoy the challenges. Recommended.” – Bilmos in Piano Guild Notes, March/April 1997
Review: “A suite of personality sketches by a respected English piano teacher and clinician. Dan Coates fans will want to try this one” – American Music Teacher, August/September 1996
