Peirson, Richard
A pianist and 'cellist who regularly played in the Rugby Sinfonia. After studying music at Cambridge and later at the Royal Academy of Music he began a full time post with the Scottish Opera. His piece 'Allegro Risotto' was the result of a commission by the Rugby Sinfonia in 1984. It is an ambitious piece with lively, energetic sections contrasting with calmer, more lyrical passages.

Paul Lewis – Three Snippets for String Orchestra (Full Score)
Three Snippets for String Orchestra is a short entertaining work and concert stocking-filler - lasting only 6½ minutes. Originally written for saxophone quartet, the three movements are: Flourish, a march-like fanfare with a suggestion of toy soldiers, a deeply-felt Love Song as an unexpectedly emotional core, and Dislocated Rag to finish with a smile - ragtime with recurring 7/8 bars thrown in to trip up the dancers! Dislocated Rag is based on the composer's music for the 1984 mystery film The Case of Marcel Duchamp about the famous French Dadaist artist.
The first movement is a Fantasia, which contains elements of sonata, rondo, and fugue. The slow movement that follows ended up more turbulent and impassioned than the composer had originally anticipated, having been written at the time of the funeral of a friend. The final movement is in complete contrast, and is meant to be carefree and light-hearted. It began as a Tarantella, a lively dance, but during the course of its composition, the composer decided to try and incorporate a Welsh element into what is originally a Spanish Dance. As a result a well known Welsh tune emerges in the texture of the dance, in the beginning hidden away so that its first fragmentary statement may well be missed altogether. Gradually the tune becomes more insistent until it eventually dominates the final section of the movement, by which time only a tone deaf listener could fail to recognise it! For secondary schools, colleges and conservatories.
