There is not much repertoire for the tenor saxophone, and so this commissioned piece will form a useful addition to an impoverished market. This work was a Guildhall School of Music and Drama exam piece between 2001 and 2004. Both movements were Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 8 exam pieces between 2006 and 2013, and both movements have also been Trinity College London Grade 8 exam pieces since 2004.

Stanley Woods – Alexander Takes A Swing (Horn Quartet & Double Bass or Tuba with optional Drums)
Written for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's horn section to play at Glyndebourne parties in the early 1960's. In the early 1960's almost all English hornists played on Alexander horns, hence the title. It was composed when Beethoven's Fidelio was being performed at Glyndebourne. One famous aria in this opera features the horns, and near the end they play individual scale run ups in canon, and so for fun the composer has incorporated this in the piece.
This polka rounds off the first act of Smetana's ever popular homeland opera. Carlo Martelli's arrangement captures the infectious festive spirit of the original to perfection.

This brilliant and vivacious dance, arranged by Carlo Martelli, occurs in the third act of Smetana's opera when the visiting circus troupe is exhibiting their skills to the local populace.
Starting out as a competition piece Conversations by Shawn Meloy is a set of clarinet duets played as though the instruments are conversing. Elements of our own way of speaking are represented, from agreement to frustration, question and answer etc. At times beautiful, at others quite harsh, but in the end a fun, interesting and challenging new work for the versatile clarinet. With a variety of mood, style and tempo they make for excellent teaching material and delightful concert items, either singly, in twos and threes or even the whole set. The parts are well balanced for interest and range and so are ideal for ensemble work, whether in group lessons, workshops, flute choirs or just for fun! Great fun to teach and play.

Schubert arr. Martelli – Marche Militaire, Opus 51 No. 1 (String Quartet)
One of the most charming of all the miniatures that Schubert composed originally for piano. This one has a particularly nostalgic association for the present arranger Carlo Martelli as it is the first piece of music he remembers being enchanted by at the age of four!
This arrangement by Gary Hunter of Schubert's Adieu portrays the song in a different colour. Written for brass quintet, the song remains lyrical and easy on the ear, and is ideal for church settings and general concert performances.

Saint-Saëns arr. Whitehurst – The Swan from The Carnival of the Animals (Brass Quintet)
The Swan is the most famous movement from The Carnival of the Animals, usually represented by the 'cello which emulates the swan elegantly gliding over the water with only its reflection for company. In this arrangement for brass quintet it is the trombone with its lush tenor sound, that should be played in the style of Tommy Dorsey, that gives the swan its grace. The other instruments accompany the trombone with rolling chords which represent the feet of the swan hidden beneath the water propelling it along. This powerful melody will leave your hair standing up and a tear in your eye.

It was once said by a famous man of letters that "Rossini's genius is that of sheer animal spirits" - this aspect of his work is present in abundance in this sparkling overture deftly arranged here for string quartet by Carlo Martelli.
The opera from which this overture gets its title was Rossini's first great success in the field of opera buffa. The overture, now arranged for string quartet by Carlo Martelli, follows the customary pattern for Rossini of slow introduction followed by two skittish tunes with attendant long crescendo to tutti.

This overture, arranged for string quartet by Carlo Martelli, had previously done service to two other operas by Rossini. However, since those two are virtually forgotten, and The Barber of Seville is one of the most popular operas ever, it is in this titular form that it is remembered.
In 1830 Rossini abandoned his highly successful career as an opera composer, and for the remaining years of his life composed almost nothing but an immense number of musical trifles under the general title Sins of Old Age. In 1919 Respighi gathered many of these pieces together and orchestrated them for the ever-popular ballet, La Boutique Fantasque. This string quartet arrangement by Carlo Martelli is one of the dance numbers derived from Respighi's score. Suitable for colleges, conservatories and professionals.

Recorder Quartet
This work was originally written for ocarinas, and in consequence each part is restricted to a range of just one octave, hence the title. It is a lively little polka in which the melody is continually being passed from one to the other of the upper parts. A fun piece that is reminiscent of a fairground organ.

The composer of this brilliant orchestral piece began his working life as a naval officer, and only after the age of 27, by sheer hard work, did he make himself a master of musical art. This arrangement for string quartet by Carlo Martelli omits only a small part of the complete work.
