Review: "Three Flute Diversions by Paul Lewis is for flute, alto flute and piccolo – one diversion each, all unaccompanied – but all three movements may be played on the C flute. Flute Flourish, for flute in C, is quite playful and jolly and covers the complete range of the instrument using grace notes, flutter-tonguing and oodles of dynamics. The second movement, Alto Flute Elegy, is perfectly suited to the alto flutes darker colours. It reaches up to a high G and its technical demands are grade 4-5. Piccolo Polka is a charming and easily accessible work, not too difficult (about grade 5). Lewis has an impressive musical history: his TV scores include Arthur of the Britons, The Prisoner of Zenda, Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Benny Hill Show" – Ann Cherry in Music Teacher September 2006

Lewis, Paul

Paul Lewis, born in 1943 in Brighton, England, has composed prolifically for British television since the age of 20, as well as producing a large body of tonal and melodic concert works. His TV scores for drama series such as Arthur of the Britons and The Prisoner of Zenda, children's series such as Seal Morning and Woof! and comedies such as Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Benny Hill Show have been heard all around the world.  His instrumental works, several of which are in the U.K. exam syllabuses, are usually happy and romantic, inspired mostly by favourite places, close musician friends and loved ones. The Campion Cameo label has issued a CD of his TV themes, and his orchestral concert music appears on CD alongside the music of other English composers such as Arnold, Holst and Delius. Traditional Etudes with a melodic flavour to suit performance. The Etudes practice speed, agility, expression and solo work, and are bright, rhythmic and full of expression. Etude No. 1 is a solo for grade 8 and above that practices fingering, note jumps, dynamics, breathing control, concentration and stamina - it is a wonderfully melodic exercise that when played well, and at the correct speed, will go down a treat in any concert. Etude No. 2 is an exercise practicing triplets whilst changing from staccato to slurred notation - this exercise as written will be useful to most students from around grade 3, and can be played in the higher octave from around grade 6. Etude No. 3 is a fast solo practicing note jumps, speed and playing in the highest octave - the exercise uses top C on several occasions and is suitable for grade 8 and above. As the piece is also melodic, it makes an excellent concert piece when played well at the correct speed with dynamics and expression. Etude No. 4 gives practice in playing in 6/8 with note jumps and triple tonguing, and would suit players around grade 6 standard. Etude No. 5 is a solo practicing longer passages and arpeggios, reaching top C and suitable for grade 8 and above. The higher passages can be easily played in the lower octave to give lower grade students fingering practice.
