Biography
Civil, Alan
Alan Civil was born in 1929 and died in 1989. Alan started to play the French horn as a young boy, and joined an army band as a teenager. He studied the horn with Aubrey Brain, the father of Dennis Brain, and played second horn to Dennis Brain in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, taking over as principal horn when Dennis Brain left. In 1955 Alan joined the Philharmonia as principal horn, and in 1966 he became the principal horn of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, where he remained until he retired in 1988. He also performed as a soloist and recordings include Mozart's 'Four Horn Concertos' and Benjamin Britten's 'Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings' with Robert Tear. He was also a member of the Alan Civil Horn Trio, taught at the Royal College of Music and was awarded an OBE in 1985. Alan was also a prolific composer and arranger, writing many pieces for the horn as well as for an array of unusual instrument combinations.

A wonderfully evocative and atmospheric piece of night music, with its smooth figures built on fourths shared between horn and piano. The introduction of hand stopping and hand glissando (unique features of the French Horn) challenge the musical, technical and interpretive qualities of both the soloist and accompanist. This work was a Trinity College London Horn in F exam piece between 1998 and 2004, and an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) grade 8 exam piece for Horn in F between 1998 and 2012. It has been a London College of Music exam piece for Horn in F since 1994.

A brilliant concert piece for a relatively experienced horn player, and one that would make an ideal finale to any recital. A short, suspenseful slow introduction leads straight into the main movement, which is an exciting gallop for both players. The fast tempo aside the range is comfortable and there are no major technical problems for the soloist. This work was an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade 6 Exam Piece between 2013 and 2022.
A short dramatic piece for horn and piano approximately grade 6 to 7 standard. Written following a day trip to Walton-on-the-Naze in Essex. Inspired by billowing cumulus clouds often seen in the English countryside on a hot summers day. The piece ends with an optional top C.

Written in memory of Lennie Clarke, who was a fellow student at the Royal Academy of Music, and played by the composer at a memorial concert. The work has been used in final recitals at the Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music.

Supplied with both Horn in F and Tenor Horn in E Flat parts, this lovely horn solo, for a student is his/her first year, covers a minimal range with very simple rhythms. The composer has cleverly highlighted the horn part with an interesting and harmonically rich piano accompaniment encouraging the soloist to perform the piece. This work was a Guildhall School of Music and Drama grade 1 exam piece for Horn in F between 1996 and 2003, and was an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) grade 1 exam piece for Horn in F between 1998 and 2012. The work has been a London College of Music grade 1 exam piece since 1994 and a Trinity College London grade 1 exam piece since 2004.
