Pleasant tunes, yet challenging in places with cadenza-like passages covering the whole 3 octaves of the flute. The melodies vary from waltzes to a rondo and incorporate scalic virtuosic passages as well as key and tempo changes. The accompaniments are mainly straight forward and the pieces should fit together well without too much rehearsal time. The series is in six books simply to keep the cost of each book at a reasonable price and to then attract players to purchasing another if they like the music. All in all nice to have some new original music to include in a recital programme alongside mainstream repertoire as variety, and accessible for an audience with some 'light fun styles'. Joseph Gething began piano lessons at the age of 16 while serving an apprenticeship at a school of building. Under the excellent teaching of Raymond Skinner, who later became a Dr. of Music, he passed his Grade 8 exam in the Theory of Music and Grade 6 in Piano. He was then offered a partnership with Raymond Skinner, playing in some of his concerts. However, Joseph gave up piano lessons turning instead to composition. Several musician friends urged him to seek publication of his works, but he became a clerk of works instead. Many years later his second wife Marilyn contacted Broadbent & Dunn about music scores he had laying about in his music room at home. Prompted by the acceptance of many of his works he once more turned his hand to composition. He passed away in March 2014.
The suggestion in Awakening Day is that with all the buds of May shooting up we must also wake up and go forward like nature. Intensity represents strong feelings in life and the need for will power to accomplish what you really want to. Paris Walk starts with an early morning walk, stark and slightly eerie, going towards the Seine with the Notre Dame glaring out in the early morning mist, before walking back past the Opera House - the walk continues, eventually coming to Montmartre, and then in the animato section climbs the steps to Sacre Coeur to see the expanse of Paris and the Eiffel Tower in the distance.
The last movement Langport March is a Trinity College London Grade 5 Exam Piece for Flute until the end of 2020 Arrangements of Somerset folk songs to give them a new lease of life and introduce them to audiences who might never otherwise hear them. Very popular with audiences, its individual movements are useful as fillers or encores. Martock Jig and Langport March are also playable on Piccolo. It is a very direct and enjoyable work and is also versatile, with versions for flute, violin or harmonica with piano accompaniment. The original harmonica version is very idiomatically written by the composer, who was long associated with the late great virtuoso Tommy Reilly. It is folk material very well suited to the instrument. For teaching studios, conservatories, libraries, amateurs and professionals. A versatile piece for flute or harmonica with piano and optional 'cello, this is also a useful and worthwhile addition to the flute, 'cello and piano repertoire, as being a happy piece and audience friendly it makes for a good contrast to other works for this ensemble. Originally written for the harmonica, for which it is a substantial showpiece, the work uses the whole range of the flute and displays the player's versatility. This arrangement by Rebecca Faith is not what is usually expected when labelled with the familiar title Silent Night. This piece of music is more of a variation of themes, the familiar melodies remaining recognisable but treated as small pockets of atmospheric motifs rather than one long lyrical melody. The style and harmonies have a more experimental magical feel whilst remaining easy on the ear, and are created to capture the attention and imagination of the listener.
Thinking of nostalgic memories of bygone days Memories pictures someone sitting on a public bench looking out to sea. Concert Waltz represents returning from a music concert to go on to happy partying and dancing, while Haunted Dreams pictures a sleeping adult haunted by memories of the past.
