Review: “Joseph Gething’s six books each contain three pieces which are varied in style and difficulty. Pleasant tunes, yet challenging in places with cadenza-like passages covering the whole 3 octaves of the flute. The melodies vary from waltzes to a rondo and incorporate scalic virtuosic passages as well as key and tempo changes. The accompaniments are mainly straight forward and the pieces should fit together well without too much rehearsal time. The series is in six books simply to keep the cost of each book at a reasonable price and to then attract players to purchasing another if they like the music. All in all nice to have some new original music to include in a recital programme alongside mainstream repertoire as variety, and accessible for an audience with some ‘light fun styles’. Gething, Joseph
Joseph Gething began piano lessons at the age of 16 while serving an apprenticeship at a school of building. Under the excellent teaching of Raymond Skinner, who later became a Dr. of Music, he passed his Grade 8 exam in the Theory of Music and Grade 6 in Piano. He was then offered a partnership with Raymond Skinner, playing in some of his concerts. However, Joseph gave up piano lessons turning instead to composition. Several musician friends urged him to seek publication of his works, but he became a clerk of works instead. Many years later his second wife Marilyn contacted Broadbent & Dunn about music scores he had laying about in his music room at home. Prompted by the acceptance of many of his works he once more turned his hand to composition. He passed away in March 2014.

Penderyn is a tiny village at the edge of the Brecon Beacons and is the birthplace of the compose's grandmother. The old church of Penderyn is enclosed by trees that are home to scores of birds from which the village takes its name - 'Hill of Birds' is the English translation. The flute evokes the bird song and in the central section plays a folk style melody, while the piano takes a harp like role with an old Welsh hymn (Llef) hidden in the harmony and following the bird song.
In this arrangement the exploration of register and alternative harmonies, together with the sustain pedal, creates an image of sound reverberation in open spaces. The piano's open fifths in the middle of the piece gives an eastern feel. Rebecca Faith has added a new original theme alongside the main melody that gives a fresh unique quality - this theme immediately sets the atmosphere in the piano introduction and is later heard more powerfully on the flute, returning at the close of the piece in the high register of the piano creating a music box like feel.
Arrangements of Somerset folk songs to give them a new lease of life and introduce them to audiences who might never otherwise hear them. Very popular with audiences, its individual movements are useful as fillers or encores. Martock Jig and Langport March are also playable on Piccolo. It is a very direct and enjoyable work and is also versatile, with versions for flute, violin or harmonica with piano accompaniment. The original harmonica version is very idiomatically written by the composer, who was long associated with the late great virtuoso Tommy Reilly. It is folk material very well suited to the instrument. For teaching studios, conservatories, libraries, amateurs and professionals. The last movement of this work Langport March was a Trinity College London Grade 5 Exam Piece for Flute between 2007 and 2022.

Sonata for Flute and Piano, Opus 17 is written in a late Romantic style. The first movement is constructed essentially in traditional sonata-allegro form, with an extensive coda augmenting the new material heard in the development. The passionate second movement opens with a lyrical theme that culminates into a free cadenza at the end. The third movement is written in theme and variation form. Of importance, the fifth variation is written as a four-part fugue and the final variation culminates by joining the theme of the third movement with that of the first. This work not only adds to the existing repertoire of intermediate-advanced flute music, but also teaches young people about traditional classical forms such as the rondo, theme and variations and the fugue. La Fille Aux Cheveux Dores (The Girl with the Golden Hair), composed by Paul Lewis and dedicated to Rachel Smith, is a study in extreme legato and breath control. It is sensuous, delicate, intimate and very French, and has the most gorgeous and romantic tune imaginable. Rachel Smith recorded this work in April 2012 on the CD The World of the Flute, released in 2013 by Polyphonic, QPRZ 029D.
The title Seren Y Nos is Welsh for Star of the Night. This atmospheric piece by Rebecca Faith is based on a simple bass line made up of three chords but the overall result is quite complex. There are two main themes, the first heard on the piano, the second introduced by the flute - these two themes are then layered, inverted and heard in different ranges, timbres and textures to create a sound that goes far beyond two simple themes. The result is a magical sound that has a distinct enchanting impression of a vast open space, hence the title Star of the Night.
