Biography
Clews, Eileen
Eileen Clews was a music specialist in Warwickshire schools before studying piano and clarinet at the Birmingham School of Music in the early 80's as a mature student. After graduation she taught both instruments to private pupils at home and A level students at the North Warwickshire College, whilst continuing piano and composition studies with Michael Freyhan in London. Eileen's first published composition was a 'Partita' for French Horn, written for her son Richard who was then a music student before going on to become Principal Horn at the Royal Opera House. This work has been in the exam syllabus for the Associated Board, Guildhall and Trinity since the late 80's, along with other works for horn, trombone, tuba and oboe. Eileen's works for woodwind were composed during her time studying composition with Edwin Roxburgh. For her teaching she made arrangements for ensemble groups to encourage players of all levels to enjoy making music together. Alongside trios for flutes and clarinets are a quartet for tubas and a brass quintet. Eileen passed away in November 2021.

Brass Quintet
This attractive brass quintet based on the traditional sea shanty What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor opens with a fanfare followed by a main theme, first on trumpets and then on the horn. A series of linked variations follow, with the tune passed between the instruments in constantly changing tempos and styles. A strong rhythmic accompaniment keeps the sea shanty mood and the piece finishes with a showy flourish. Arranged by Eileen Clews, this light hearted work gives each player the chance to show off their instrument, so making it an ideal concert piece or a study piece for brass workshops.
Clarinet Trio
Always firm favourites with piano students, these pieces from Robert Schumann's Album for the Young have been attractively arranged by Eileen Clews for three clarinets. To suit pupils of all abilities the third part stays mainly in the lower register, yet still gives the player an interesting part and a vital role in the ensemble. Used successfully in private teaching, group lessons and with a clarinet choir they are fun to play and make for delightful concert items.
