Oboe and bassoon are joined by a lively string bass in this charming English chamber work. For colleges, conservatories and professionals.
Review: Divertimento by Martin Yates for the rather unlikely combination of oboe, bassoon and double bass, combines the best attributes of each into a surprisingly creditable recital work. The bass part negotiates both the bass and treble staff, and in similar fashion the bassoon performs extensively in both tenor and bass clefs. The writing displays abundant dissonance with traces of chromaticism, all in the contest of complete rhythmic independence. Promising to tax the most proficient of players, the piece consists of three contrasting movements, the first to be performed quickly, displaying a lightness of style in a pointillistic texture. The slow middle section explores lyricism, and the concluding section projects spirit and energy.” – The Instrumentalist, December 1995
